Find your flow
Here you go, just reading my very first post. I always believed, it should be about a special topic. Whilst searching for that very special theme for a long time and nothing seeming good enough I came to the conclusion, that this way it could take me years to start my blog. Was I just a little bit afraid of plunging into something new and unconsciously procrastinating? Noo, of course not..
Going where the flow is, helps me a lot to find happiness and contentment in life. So that’s what I’ll share with you first. Have fun finding your happy ways..
The best advice on the way of finding my career path was given to me by a dear friend. Since then, I always remember his words when I’m struggling to make a decision in work or private life.
„Just go where the flow is, and everything will be alright.“
What is the flow?
When you feel passionate and deeply interested in something, if it fascinates you, makes you happy and lets you forget the world when doing it..that’s where the flow is, that’s where you should go. Remember when you were drawing as a child, forgot everything around you and got lost in time? That’s the flow.
It’s true, that you should always think about pros and cons when making big decisions, as well as possible future impacts. But don’t forget to listen to your guts too. Imagine your decision is made. How do you feel? Content, excited, in balance and comfortable with yourself and your decision? Are your overall feelings positive? If yes, that quite certain is the right way.
On the other hand, if your feelings tend to be anxious, unsettled and mostly negative, think again. Chances are, that you’ll find a better way for yourself. Maybe you’ll have to find a completely different approach or perhaps only change some subjects to be pleased with your personal solution. Give yourself some time for the process. Everyone is different and situations change. One time it takes us a few seconds to decide, and other times it takes days or weeks.
Find your flow
If you don’t quite know where your flow is, go out and look for it. Be bold and try new things. Even if you take it in small steps, it will bring you further. Just don’t stay put and hope for better times to come. They only come, when you make a move. It doesn’t matter if the move is tiny, make lots of tiny moves and you’ll get a big one without noticing.
For example, you thought about going on a hike lots of times, but found endless reasons why not to? Start by doing a shorter hike near to your home. You’ll get the feeling of it, gather confidence and without noticing will start going bigger and further. And if you don’t like it, that’s fine too, because now you know where there’s no flow for you and you can confidently turn other ways.
If doing something new feels to overwhelming in the first place, we tend to just give up. Instead try to tackle this big new thing into smaller actions that feel challenging but manageable. Those are just the kind of actions you can get into the state of a flow with. You’ll be so proud of yourself after going out there and accomplishing them. After being brave a few times and plunging in, you’ll notice that trying new things starts being a habit and getting easier very quickly. So, as Nike has been saying for years: “Just do it!”
